Pride and Prejudice: Jane Austen (Penguin Classics) Paperback – 30 Jan. 2003
Purchase options and add-ons
One of the BBC's '100 Novels That Shaped Our World'
'The best-loved book by our best-loved novelist' Independent
With its 'light and bright and sparkling' dialogue, its romantic denouement and its lively heroine, Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen's most perennially popular novel. The love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, who misjudge, then challenge and change each other, is also a novel about the search for happiness and self- knowledge in a world of strict social rules, where a woman must marry well to survive.

Review
"Nobody has ever been slyer with characters than Austen." --Marlon James, "My 10 Favorite Books," in T: The New York Times Style Magazine
From the Inside Flap
When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited, while he struggles to remain indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life.
This edition includes a new chronology, additional suggestions for further reading, and the original Penguin Classics introduction by Tony Tanner.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
"My dear Mr. Bennet," said his lady to him one day, "have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?"
Mr. Bennet replied that he had not.
"But it is," returned she; "for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it."
Mr. Bennet made no answer.
"Do not you want to know who has taken it?" cried his wife impatiently.
"You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it."
This was invitation enough.
"Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England; that he came down on Monday in a chaise and four to see the place, and was so much delighted with it that he agreed with Mr. Morris immediately; that he is to take possession before Michaelmas, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week."
"What is his name?"
"Bingley."
"Is he married or single?"
"Oh! single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!"
"How so? how can it affect them?"
"My dear Mr. Bennet," replied his wife, "how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them."
"Is that his design in settling here?"
"Design! nonsense, how can you talk so! But it is very likely that he may fall in love with one of them, and therefore you must visit him as soon as he comes."
"I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better, for as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr. Bingley might like you the best of the party."
"My dear, you flatter me. I certainly have had my share of beauty, but I do not pretend to be any thing extraordinary now. When a woman has five grown up daughters, she ought to give over thinking of her own beauty."
"In such cases, a woman has not often much beauty to think of."
"But, my dear, you must indeed go and see Mr. Bingley when he comes into the neighbourhood."
"It is more than I engage for, I assure you."
"But consider your daughters. Only think what an establishment it would be for one of them. Sir William and Lady Lucas are determined to go, merely on that account, for in general you know they visit no new comers. Indeed you must go, for it will be impossible for us to visit him, if you do not."
"You are over scrupulous surely. I dare say Mr. Bingley will be very glad to see you; and I will send a few lines by you to assure him of my hearty consent to his marrying which ever he chuses of the girls; though I must throw in a good word for my little Lizzy."
"I desire you will do no such thing. Lizzy is not a bit better than the others; and I am sure she is not half so handsome as Jane, nor half so good humoured as Lydia. But you are always giving her the preference."
"They have none of them much to recommend them," replied he; "they are all silly and ignorant like other girls; but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters."
"Mr Bennet, how can you abuse your own children in such a way? You take delight in vexing me. You have no compassion on my poor nerves."
"You mistake me, my dear. I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends. I have heard you mention them with consideration these twenty years at least."
"Ah! you do not know what I suffer."
"But I hope you will get over it, and live to see many young men of four thousand a year come into the neighbourhood."
"It will be no use to us, if twenty such should come since you will not visit them."
"Depend upon it, my dear, that when there are twenty, I will visit them all."
Mr Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three and twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. Her mind was less difficult to develope. She was a woman of mean understanding, little information and uncertain temper. When she was discontented she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news.

About the author

Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish. She lived with her family at Steventon until they moved to Bath when her father retired in 1801. After his death in 1805, she moved around with her mother; in 1809, they settled in Chawton, near Alton, Hampshire. Here she remained, except for a few visits to London, until in May 1817 she moved to Winchester to be near her doctor. There she died on July 18, 1817. As a girl Jane Austen wrote stories, including burlesques of popular romances. Her works were only published after much revision, four novels being published in her lifetime. These are Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma(1816). Two other novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1818 with a biographical notice by her brother, Henry Austen, the first formal announcement of her authorship. Persuasion was written in a race against failing health in 1815-16. She also left two earlier compositions, a short epistolary novel, Lady Susan, and an unfinished novel, The Watsons. At the time of her death, she was working on a new novel, Sanditon, a fragmentary draft of which survives.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 January 2025A book to read again and again. In some ways as almost a farce, the visiting of houses, the letters, the comings and goings of carriages, the pretensions of class. All wonderfully told. Not as bleak as a Brontë novel, the dark corners are not inhabited by thoroughly reprehensible characters (Wickham, Collins etc) a much lighter read. I wonder if Doris Day copied Austen for the plots of her films?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 February 2025Saw the film, two actually, the one with Kiera Knightly is the best...Read the book, and the aforementioned film is quite faithful (in dialogue, etc.) to it's origins. The book was good, too! Bought this to add to my kindle collection, very cheap, so why not! Recommend both, the film and the book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 December 2024This edition has the excellent original introduction by Tony Tanner that greatly enhances the philosophical appreciation of the work (with references to Locke and Hume). These examinations of perception raise the enjoyment above the superficial. There are many references to studies; personally I felt points made in Barash's Sociobiology and Behavior however also throw light for instance on the social interactions that Austen examines in such great interior detail.
This edition lacks the illustrations in some other editions, as well as the short essays on such mundane businesses oas English tea-drinking. But otherwise, although the print is quite small, it is well printed and well-bound to withstand multiple excursions.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 March 2025How could I not enjoy this classic. I’ve read it before and love it every time. It arrived in very good condition.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 October 2024The book came well packaged and in great condition.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 July 2020As many of you know, this novel is about Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. It is about a woman's role and ambition in the society of the time. Mr Bingley moves to Netherfield Park, an exciting potential husband for the ladies of Merryton. He is joined by his rather proud and arrogant friend Darcy, and his 2 rotten sisters. Jane, Lizzy's elder sister, and Mr Bingley become very attached to each other especially through some outrageous tactical planning of Mrs Bennet, Jane and Lizzy's mother. But Darcy angers the local society with his arrogance and disdain. However quickly becomes enamoured with Elizabeth and her 'fine eyes'. Is there any hope for these two?
Jane Austen wrote one of the most famous opening lines in English Literature. The dialogue and writing are like the delicate keys on a piano or Earl Grey being being poured into a china cup. Light delicious and fragrant. Lizzy is an intelligent, inspirational and engaging character, who doesn't bow down to the social expectations of the time. This novel certainly deserves its place in the Top 10 of the BBC Big Read.
