David Fincher: Mind Games Hardcover – 9 Dec. 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
David Fincher: Mind Games is the definitive critical and visual survey of the Academy Award– and Golden Globe–nominated works of director David Fincher. From feature films Alien 3, Se7en, The Game, Fight Club, Panic Room, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, and Mank through his MTV clips for Madonna and the Rolling Stones and the Netflix series House of Cards and Mindhunter, each chapter weaves production history with original critical analysis, as well as with behind the scenes photography, still-frames, and original illustrations from Little White Lies' international team of artists and graphic designers. Mind Games also features interviews with Fincher's frequent collaborators, including Jeff Cronenweth, Angus Wall, Laray Mayfield, Holt McCallany, Howard Shore and Erik Messerschmidt.
Grouping Fincher's work around themes of procedure, imprisonment, paranoia, prestige and relationship dynamics, Mind Games is styled as an investigation into a filmmaker obsessed with investigation, and the design will shift to echo case files within a larger psychological profile.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 November 2024Purchased as a gift, absolutely loved it
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 June 2022A shame that a director as meticulous, detailed and well-researched as David Fincher gets a book with subpar attention to sub-editing/proof-reading. So many grammatical mistakes. The book is well-researched, has interesting ideas and interviewees, but the writing is a little purple-prosy in places. The visuals were a little too dark (I know it's his style, but then maybe use them bigger? Likewise with the opening credits), plus the aforementioned subbing issues jarred me out of the narrative a few too many times.

I purchased this as a Christmas present for my son, who is a huge David Fincher fan and he was thrilled with it and so far loves the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretentious
The book has a lot of information but the writers language to convey the message is a little superfluous and pretentious. YMMV

2.0 out of 5 stars "Se7en's is dizzyingly vertiginous—which is to say pretentious"
I absolutely loved Adam Nayman's books on the Coen Brothers and Paul Thomas Anderson, so understand I'm really disappointed to be leaving a review like this. The quality of the physical book is great! The pictures are great! But the constant pretentious vocabulary and dawdling nature of this book is horrible! I have no doubt an insane amount of research went it, and I'm sure Nayman knows exactly what he's talking about. That said, this isn't a friendly book. It's going to throw a billion unduly complicated words at you just because it can, and it's going to talk a heck of a lot about stuff you have no interest in (i.e not Fincher).
(note: I'm sure this book will be a blessing to certain people, it's just not for me)
