Terry Pratchett sold his first story when he was fifteen, which earned him enough money to buy a second-hand typewriter. His first novel, a humorous fantasy entitled The Carpet People, appeared in 1971 from the publisher Colin Smythe. Terry worked for many years as a journalist and press officer, writing in his spare time and publishing a number of novels, including his first Discworld novel, The Color of Magic, in 1983. In 1987 he turned to writing full time, and has not looked back since. To date there are a total of 36 books in the Discworld series, of which four (so far) are written for children. The first of these children's books, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, won the Carnegie Medal. A non-Discworld book, Good Omens, his 1990 collaboration with Neil Gaiman, has been a longtime bestseller, and was reissued in hardcover by William Morrow in early 2006 (it is also available as a mass market paperback (Harper Torch, 2006) and trade paperback (Harper Paperbacks, 2006). Terry's latest book, Nation, a non-Discworld standalone YA novel was published in October of 2008 and was an instant New York Times and London Times bestseller. Regarded as one of the most significant contemporary English-language satirists, Pratchett has won numerous literary awards, was named an Officer of the British Empire “for services to literature” in 1998, and has received four honorary doctorates from the Universities of Warwick, Portsmouth, Bath, and Bristol. His acclaimed novels have sold more than 55 million copies (give or take a few million) and have been translated into 36 languages. Terry Pratchett lived in England with his family, and spent too much time at his word processor. Some of Terry's accolades include: The Carnegie Medal, Locus Awards, the Mythopoetic Award, ALA Notable Books for Children, ALA Best Books for Young Adults, Book Sense 76 Pick, Prometheus Award and the British Fantasy Award.

Seller not clear on what edition is for sale
I bought this book and whilst is matches the quality descriptio of the book, the product description was relatively silent on the edition. The book supplied is an American Book Club Edition, effectively the third US edition. The first UK edition was limited to around 1000 copies, se Colin Smythe website, the first US edition, 2000 copies, was printed in the UK by Colin, the US reprinted a further 1800 more before the Book Club Edition was released. I've not yet established how many were in the BCE print run

Published in 1981! As ever where Douglas Adams & STP lead so many others meekly follow. There are some truly jaw dropping moments in this. Can't believe I'd not read it before. Absolutely love it.

One of Terry’s earlier non Discworld books, but with many of the ideas he would develop in the Discworld series . Interesting as an understanding of his developing talents . A good read , though a little too reminiscent of Ringworld without being a parody of that

One of the best sci-fi novels I've ever read, and one of Terry Pratchett's best. Also interesting in that it's presumably the acorn from which the mighty Discworld series germinated. The basic message of this tale is of such scope that it truly boggles the mind.
All the characters are inventively formed, and well-fleshed-out. The plot twists and turns as it slowly reveals itself, keeping the reader alert. As always with Terry, it has a superb, thought-provoking ending.

Thought this was a great find as this is one hard to get hands on. It shipped quickly and it goes on my shelf perfectly with T.Ps Dark side of the sun which is also in mp3 format. Great product.

I wish he'd carried on with sf in some ways, it needs a poke in much the way that the fantasy genre did before Diskworld.
I've been reading a lot of first novels recently and they are often wobbly. Pratchett displays a few tiny wobbles here but you definitely get a sense of impending master from his humour, timing and characters.

I somehow missed reading this when it came out all those years back. I'm very glad I read it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome direction for Terry Pratchett
Reviewed in the United States on 7 November 2012
Ive read the entire Disc World series. This book didn't have any of the usual characters and at first I was upset, wanting more from the disc world. BUT though it took a bit to develop this book is really really awesome. Some very unexpected directions and well developed ideas towards the end.

Also, some well developed thoughts about our human view of potentially meeting aliens and how we may interact.

A very very interesting book that I look forward to re-reading some time in the future.
