The inside of Derren Brown's head is a strange and mysterious place. Now you can climb inside and wander around. Find out just how Derren's mind works, see what motivates him and discover what made him the weird and wonderful person he is today.
Obsessed with magic and illusions since childhood, Derren's life to date has been an extraordinary journey and here, in Confessions of a Conjuror, he allows us all to join him on a magical mystery tour - to the centre of his brain... Taking as his starting point the various stages of a conjuring trick he's performing in a crowded restaurant, Derren's endlessly engaging narrative wanders through subjects from all points of the compass, from the history of magic and the fundamentals of psychology to the joys of internet shopping and the proper use of Parmesan cheese. Brilliant, hilarious and entirely unlike anything else you have ever read before, Confessions of a Conjuror is also a complete and utter joy.

In Confessions of a Conjuror, Derren Brown invites you on a whimsical journey through his unusual mind. Structured around the various stages of a conjuring trick, performed by his younger self in a crowded restaurant, Derren's endlessly engaging narrative takes you from the history of magic, to speculations on the manufacturing of Monster Munch and the correct way to poach an egg, via discussions about psychology, what he hums while cleaning his teeth and the social niceties surrounding Parmesan cheese.
Hugely revealing, hilarious and unlike anything you've read before, Confessions of a Conjuror is a refreshing alternative to autobiography that will charm and delight you.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 December 2010I totally get this book - it is fantastic! It is not another repeat of Tricks of the Mind (equally brilliant) but completely different in style. I bought the book and the audio CD and I found the audio CD easier to follow because there is so much going on, it's sometimes difficult to keep up (when I'm reading at night before going to sleep). Reading the book or listening to the CD is almost like being at one of Derren's shows. The story weaves in and out as does Derren's performance on stage which moves seamlessly from one piece to another and backwards and forwards, whirling you here, there and everywhere to baffle and astound you. If you've read or listened to the chapter "Magic" from "Tricks of the Mind", then the way Derren describes how to perform a simple trick is kind of how this book is put together. I love the footnotes which remind me a little of Terry Pratchett's style, often funny with laugh out loud moments. The ending really made me smile! It's definitely a book to re-read again and again.
Perhaps Derren (I know you love Amazon so maybe you will read this review?!) you would narrate some more audio CDs like the Hypnosis, Magic & Memory chapters from Tricks of the Mind. Being able to try out different techniques is really fun and you are a good teacher. I've already tried other similar memory techniques but yours are the best. A relaxation one would be awesome and while you are snuggling down with your trusty earplugs you can think about all of your fans dozing off to sleep to the sound of your dulcet tones.
If you're not Derren and you want to know more about his earplugs and other personal habits then you need to buy this book!
And finally - if you've read the book, before writing your review just remember Derren's wise words - "be kind".
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 October 2010Being a fan I had this book on pre-order for quite some time. Having read his previous work Tricks Of The Mind, and enjoyed his style greatly, I was consumed with excitment with the thought of him writing another book. A soon as this tome plonked onto my doormat (by the way, thank you Amazon for getting this to me on the day of release, considering I opted for free delivery) I opened it up and began reading and just couldn't put it down.
Having already made plain that I am a fan, it is clear that I'm likely to run parallel to Derren Browns feelings on various things and his points of view. At least that was my feeling before the book arrived. I was delighted to have some of my views on things challenged or at least adjusted. Opening up his life time of knowledge and research I feel enlightened and invigorated, and inspired to further my reading on some of the subjects and authors that Derren alluded to in this latest work.
Whilst it sounds quite like Tricks of The Mind, the narrative is really rather different. And surprisingly creative. It basically follows a trick in a resturant, with each element of the trick allowing him to go off onto a tangent, either on the psychological meaning or to reveal his personal experience/history. A very interesting take on a Biography format, and highly enjoyable.
With the humour, wit, deep knowledge and compassion of the performer/writer we all know and adore. I urge you to buy this interesting and genuine page turner.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 November 2011I held off reading this for a long time, I'm a fan of Derren Brown and didn't want the disappointing experience of a poor biography from someone I like (a pale shade of discovering someone you admire is a bore), so having read the reviews I waited. Curiosity overcame me in the end though and I'm very glad it did. Yes the structure is unusual and yes there are a lot of footnotes (though I thought these were a rather charming conceit - I'm a sucker for a good footnote) - but after a chapter or so I easily got into the swing of it. And very good it was then indeed, a truly personal autobiography - very honest, very funny and not at all mawkish - what more do you want? Some reviews have criticised Derren's vocabulary - rather rude, surely you can describe your own life in whichever words you chose, but I think they rather miss the point, there's some fairly tongue in cheek pedantry about the odd word, but nothing out of the ordinary. Others have criticised the opening chapters as being full of self loathing and made it sound like this is an indulgence - I honestly don't think there's an unusual amount here, don't we all feel like idiots when placed in difficult and public situations? I'll finish with the highest praise I think you can give a piece of autobiography - as soon as I finished it, I ordered Tricks of the Mind because I didn't want to let go of Derren's authorial voice so quickly.

Libro autobiografico, ben narrato. Molti episodi simpatici e divertenti. Essere in bravo mago non è questione solo di manual dexterity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read
Everything you expect from Derren Brown. Delightfully funny, charming and interesting. A different type of autobiography that reads very well. Shares many experiences that we all go through outselfs without realizing it. Its rewarding to know that so many others share the common experiences that Derren talks about. Must read for Derren Brown fans.

Excelente libro. Humor inglés rebuscado. Este libro es un viajesote si eres mago y tienes deficit de atención. Si eres fan, las risas se te salen
