Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

Directed by Peter Weir

After an abrupt and violent encounter with a French warship inflicts severe damage upon his ship, a captain of the British Royal Navy begins a chase over two oceans to capture or destroy the enemy, though he must weigh his commitment to duty and ferocious pursuit of glory against the safety of his devoted crew, including the ship's thoughtful surgeon, his best friend.

Do you want to see a guillotine in Piccadilly? Want to call that raggedy-ass Napoleon your king..? You want your children to sing the "La Marseillaise!?"

No! It's not exactly a challenging watch, and it's a little hacky in a few places as well (particulary as the teenagers, the chamber music scenes and so on.). But it's also clever, too — for instance, the central Captain/Doctor relationship is explored through the French Captain/Doctor "relationship" as well. Indulgently fun.
