Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace(1999)

Dir. Directed by George Lucas

From the vantage point of 2024, it seems clear that Jar Jar was both a racist caricature and an uncomfortable reminder within the complex nostalgic framework of Star Wars that non-white actually people exist and cannot simply be waved away. It similarly seems very '1999' and very illuminating of Lucas' theory of mind (and screenwriting) that the director didn't realise that believing he had absolutely no "real world" connection in mind, doesn't mean it can also be deeply problematic. Still, if the Jar Jar discourse of the time now seems a little tame, it's only because it was a harbinger of worse things to come about how movies have gone 'woke' by daring to cast, I dunno, a woman. Anyway, no wonder the character was so hated that the actor, Ahmed Best, was bullied to the point of considering suicide. I may have gone too far in a few places, indeed.

Synopsis: Anakin Skywalker, a young slave strong with the Force, is discovered on Tatooine. Meanwhile, the evil Sith have returned, enacting their plot for revenge against the Jedi.
