A devastating portrayal of a character who is unable to forgive himself and is hesitant to engage with anyone ever again. It features a near-ideal balance between portraying unrecoverable anguish and tender warmth, and is paradoxically grandiose in its subtle intimacy. The mechanics of life led me to watch this lying on a bed in a chain hotel by Heathrow Airport, and if this colourless circumstance blunted the film's emotional impact on me, I am probably thankful for it. Indeed, I'm reduced in this review to simply remembering my favourite interactions. You could write a whole essay about one particular incident: its surfaces, subtexts and angles... all despite nothing of any substance ever being said. Truly stunning.
