Whereever she is making films, in the Pacific Northwest or the everglades of Florida, Kelly Reicherdt always manages to convey an authentic sense of place without resorting to stereotype, and no other American filmmaker other than Eastwood captures the most tedious environs of the US. Anyway, imagine an enervated, cynical (and perhaps rather more realistic) Badlands, and you wouldn't go to far wrong. I even think I spotted a Pickpocket reference!
